Yes the city is expensive!Though finding a place to rent out side the city will cut your costs quite a bit! The mass transit system is awesome. Getting to and from downtown Munich is easy from almost all neighboring cities. It has been a dream of mine to live in either Munich or Berlin myself. So have a lot of fun!
